Fresh charcoal, you gleam with a shining darkness.
With a smile that shone
My grandfather’s face was never dark.
Raintree, with its evergreen leaves it shelters us from the Singaporean downpours
My white-haired grandfather embraced me the same way
Before he left and did not come back.
Nomad, in the desert do you wander?
Seeking your oasis
My quiet grandfather is searching for me too.
Crimson balloon, high up in the azure sky you burst apart,
My grandfather’s lungs were pierced by invisible hands
Too tiny to be seen.
Shattered window, who gave you metal grilles to hide your face?
Like a bird flying in the sky
My kindly grandfather cannot return.
